Cabin I is a genuine, hand-hewn log cabin that lets guests experience what it was like to stay in an 1850s frontier home while still enjoying modern comforts. Nestled on the Galloway family’s secluded farm atop Lookout Mountain, the one-bedroom cabin sleeps up to five guests with a queen-size bed in the loft, a queen-sized pull-out sofa and an additional regular sofa in the living room. Towels and linens are provided, and there’s plenty of room in the open living/dining area to gather around the rock fireplace or watch a favorite movie on the DVD/VCR player.

Step through the front door and you’re greeted by exposed log walls, rustic antiques and handcrafted furniture that radiate old-world charm. Despite its historic character, Cabin I includes a fully equipped kitchen with dishes, utensils, pots and pans, a coffee maker, microwave and toaster. An air conditioner keeps the cabin cool in summer, and gas logs in the stone fireplace create a cozy atmosphere on cool mountain nights. Outside, you’ll find a private porch overlooking the woods and pastures where you can relax with morning coffee while listening to birdsong and watching the farm animals wander by.

Guests love unwinding in the five-person hot tub under a canopy of stars. When the sun sets, fire up the charcoal grill (bring your own charcoal) or gather around the campfire ring to roast marshmallows. Because the cabin sits on a 196-acre farm with cows, goats, rocks and a fishing pond, you’re invited to explore the property and enjoy true country peace. If you’re looking for a place to disconnect from city life, Cabin I delivers an authentic slice of Alabama mountain living.

Unique Features

Cabin I’s biggest draw is its authenticity—each log and beam dates back more than a century, yet the cabin has been lovingly restored with modern amenities. A soothing five-person hot tub sits just outside the cabin, and a private campfire pit provides a favorite place to tell stories and stargaze. Inside, the rock fireplace with gas logs adds both heat and ambience, and a vintage VCR/DVD player invites nostalgic movie nights.

Guests also appreciate the sense of space and privacy. Unlike crowded resorts, Bear Creek Log Cabins are scattered across a large family farm, so you won’t see neighboring cabins from your porch. You’re free to roam the pastures, feed the goats or drop a line in the private fishing pond. Because the owners live on the property, you always have someone nearby if you need anything, yet they respect your privacy and let you enjoy the cabin at your own pace.

Things To Do

Cabin I is ideally situated for exploring Northeast Alabama’s remarkable scenery. The Little River Canyon National Preserve is just minutes away and showcases a river that flows along the top of Lookout Mountain. Visitors enjoy hiking along rim trails, viewing waterfalls, picnicking at scenic overlooks and swimming in natural pools. Stop by the Little River Canyon Center to watch a film about the preserve or join a ranger-led program.

A short drive north leads to DeSoto State Park, a mountain park built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The park features numerous waterfalls, miles of wooded hiking and biking trails and seasonal wildflower displays. One of the park’s highlights is DeSoto Falls, a 107-foot waterfall that can be seen from an accessible overlook. For more outdoor adventures, take a day trip to Buck’s Pocket State Park, where you can hike along canyon rims and watch for bald eagles, or spend an afternoon fishing at DeKalb County Public Fishing Lake.

If you crave excitement, True Adventure Sports offers rock climbing, rappelling, zip-line tours, cave explorations, treasure hunts and kayaking trips on Little River. Professional guides provide all the gear and instruction you need, making it a great choice for families and groups. In winter, head up the road to Mentone’s Cloudmont Ski Resort to ski or snowboard on Alabama’s only ski slopes.

Fort Payne, just down the mountain, is home to the Alabama Fan Club and Museum—an homage to the Grammy-winning country band Alabama—and the Fort Payne Depot Museum housed in an 1891 railway depot. Stroll through downtown to browse boutiques and antique shops or grab a bite at locally owned restaurants. Nearby Mentone is a bohemian mountain village known for art galleries, craft shops and Brow Park’s sunset views. Seasonal festivals, farmers markets and live music events give visitors plenty of reasons to linger in the area.

Reviews

Will Go Back – The cabins were clean and easy to find. Far enough away from each other for privacy. Close to town and to the Little River Canyon Parkway. Full kitchen, grill, fire pit, hot tub. Tiny TV, but then we didn’t go up there to watch TV anyway. Owners were close enough to call if needed but left you to yourselves. Nicki S, Tuscaloosa, Alabama
A Slice of Heaven – We stayed in Cabin 1 for our 27th anniversary. It was perfect. The cabin comfortably sleeps two but can accommodate more. The hot tub was a bonus. The countryside was just beautiful. We spent much of our week outdoors—coffee on the back porch, hiking or hanging out in the hot tub. The property of homeowners Sandy and Randy was more than we were expecting, with cows, goats, rocks and a fishing pond. You were more than welcome to wander their property. I would choose this cabin again for the two of us. Steven, Algonquin, Illinois
Amazing Experience! – My husband and I went there last year for our anniversary. Neither of us had ever been to the Ft. Payne area, but have now reserved the weekend for our next anniversary. Owners were awesome—helpful but stayed out of the way. We had free reign of the great fishing in their pond, beautiful scenery and the CABIN!!!! Like stepping back in time (but still enjoying modern conveniences like power, water, heat and air!). This was a great long-weekend getaway. We will go back many times!!! Brienza, Tallassee, Alabama

About the Owner/Manager

Randy and Sandy Galloway (and their daughter Jacey) own Bear Creek Log Cabins. After collecting and restoring several 19th‑century log cabins, they moved them to their family farm on Lookout Mountain and rebuilt them as unique vacation rentals. The Galloways live on site and treat guests like friends. When you book directly with them, they personally handle your reservation, greet you on arrival and ensure that everything in your cabin meets your expectations. They are happy to share local tips on hiking, fishing and dining and encourage guests to explore the farm and meet the animals.

Because Randy and Sandy operate a small, family‑run business, booking directly with them helps support local entrepreneurs and avoids third‑party booking fees. They pride themselves on providing an authentic cabin experience at a fair price and look forward to welcoming you to their slice of Lookout Mountain.
